Not-For-Profit vs. Registered Charity
Canadian PKU & Allied Disorders Inc. is a registered Not-For-Profit Corporation, but NOT a Registered Charity. This means that we cannot provide tax receipts for donations or purchases, and we are often asked why.
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has rules about what activities Registered Charities can engage in. Specifically, Registered Charities cannot use more than 10% of their resources (financial assets, staff, volunteers, Directors, etc.) for political purposes – defined as the purpose to retain, oppose or change the law, policy or decision of any level of government in Canada or a foreign country. (More Information).
Since CanPKU spends considerable resources advocating for better access of PKU treatments for all Canadians, we cannot be a Registered Charity, and thus cannot provide tax receipts.
