New Diagnosis
A new diagnosis can feel overwhelming - especially when it happens through newborn screening. You don’t need to learn everything at once. Start with the basics, lean on your clinic team, and take one step at a time.
We also want to recognize that - unfortunately - not all diagnosis happen through newborn screening - and this often provides more frustration.

First Steps
Many families find it helpful to focus on:
• Confirming the diagnosis and understanding what it means
• Meeting your metabolic clinic team
• Learning your immediate dietary plan and medical nutrition needs
• Understanding what monitoring looks like (and why it matters)
• Asking where to find reliable resources
|
|
Your Clinic Team Is Your Primary Guide
Your metabolic clinic provides individualized targets and instructions. If you ever feel unsure or receive conflicting information online, return to your clinic as the source of medical guidance.

|
Helpful Questions to Ask Early On
• What do we need to do right now?
• What are our targets and how often are we monitoring?
• How do we count or track intake in our clinic?
• What should we do during illness?
• Who do we contact after hours or in an emergency?
• What support exists for formula/medical nutrition access?

Emotional Support Matters
Many caregivers experience shock, grief, guilt, or fear at the beginning. These feelings are common — and they do not mean you are doing anything wrong. Support can come from your clinic, peers, and trusted communities.
