Clinic & Clinical Care
Your metabolic clinic is your primary source of medical guidance. Individualized care plans, lab targets, dietary prescriptions, and treatment decisions should always come directly from your clinical team.

For condition-specific monitoring and treatment details, visit your disorder page: PKU | HCU | MSUD | UCDs

The information on this website is educational in nature and is not a substitute for medical advice. Always contact your metabolic clinic for:

  • Illness management decisions
  • Emergency care guidance

What your clinic team may support
  • Regular monitoring and lab testing
  • Growth and development tracking
  • Formula and dietary adjustments
  • Transition planning (pediatric to adult care)
  • Pregnancy planning and maternal management
  • Emergency planning and sick day protocols
Communicating with your team
Building a collaborative relationship with your clinic team supports long-term stability. Keeping food records, asking questions, and sharing concerns early can help prevent crises and reduce stress.

If you feel unsure, unheard, or confused about your plan, it is appropriate to ask for clarification. Your clinic team wants you to understand your care.
Illness and sick days (general guidance)
Illness can increase metabolic stress and affect stability. Each disorder has specific sick day protocols provided by your clinic.

General principles may include:
  • Contact your clinic early if intake decreases or symptoms worsen
  • Maintain hydration
  • Follow your clinic’s written emergency or sick day plan
  • Seek urgent care if symptoms escalate

In Canada, call 911 or your provincial emergency number for life-threatening symptoms. Bring your emergency letter or written protocol to the emergency department if available.
