Our Rares in Canada
At CanPKU+, we believe that data helps build connection and understanding across our rare disease community.
The maps below display the approximate locations of individuals and families affected by the rare metabolic disorders we support — including PKU, HCU, MSUD, UCDs, and MPS — as well as a map showing metabolic clinics across Canada.
These maps are created using Google My Maps and are based only on postal codes provided by members who have self-identified both their rare disorder and a confirmed personal diagnosis.
Please note that these maps are approximate and only as good as the information we have at hand:
-
If you do not see yourself or your family represented on the map, it may mean we do not have your postal code or diagnosis recorded - or that you have moved and forgotten to update us.
-
The information represents the most recent data we have available at the time of update. (28OCT2025)
To be included in the map, please visit the Manage My Profile link at the top of the page and update your information. (or email website@canpku.org with the name of the person who lives with rare and the information we should update)
Once your profile has been updated, let us know, and we will include your data in the next map refresh.
Together, these maps help illustrate the strength, reach, and diversity of our rare disease community across Canada — and the importance of continuing to connect, support, and advocate from coast to coast.

Our Metabolic Clinics in Canada
Your clinic is the primary and best point of access for care. The information below is for navigation and support only. You will need a referral to the metabolic clinic to come from another doctor (your family practitioner, urgent care clinic etc).
British Columbia
Alberta
Saskatchewan
Manitoba
Ontario
Quebec
New Brunswick
Nova Scotia
Newfoundland and Labrador
Prince Edward Island
Northwest Territories
Nunavut

Note: Patients from Prince Edward Island, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon do not have dedicated metabolic clinics in their home province or territory, although there may be programs in the hospitals. They are typically referred to the nearest larger center for specialized care. PEI patients often go to IWK Health Centre in Halifax, NS. NWT and YT patients are often referred to Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, AB or Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, AB. NU patients are often referred to CHEO in Ottawa, ON.
Coverage across Canada
We recognize coverage across the country differs based on the province or territory and in some cases the area of the province or territory you live in. We refer to this as the postal code lottery. We have advocacy work to be done in this regard and more information is available here
In 2008 we created a report card for across the country. This quickly became out of date (with some thanks to our community for their advocacy work. Our latest update is current as of Oct 2023. As you can well imagine, this has also gone out of date. If you have any edits you can add please send them along to website@canpku.org.
Thank you for your help in keeping the website current!
