CanPKU+ can help by:

  • Providing suggestions on "Low Protein" options available at a standard grocery store.
  • Advise the closest metabolic center available to you should you need emergency care while in Canada. (This may be an out of pocket expense).
  • When immigrating, Help you figure out which clinic will be closest to you. We will need to know your new location - including the city as some provinces have more than one option.
  • Help you to ensure you have the documents the clinic of your choice will need to continue your care. (Referral letter, test results etc)
  • Try and locate a mentor family who will assist you with getting used to "life in Canada".

CanPKU+ cannot help by:

  • Writing a letter of support/recommendation for your immigration to Canada.
  • Locate a family to "sponsor" your arrival to Canada.
  • Provide shipment of foods/formulas to countries outside of Canada.
  • Provide prescriptions of any kind (this is only done by professional clinical staff.)

Other things to know:

  • Federal insurance policies (Blue Cross) may be available for those arriving under refugee status until provincial policies come into effect. Please ensure they will cover pre-existing conditions and clinic appointments BEFORE arriving.

  • We suggest moving with the supplies you may need for at least 3-4 months to cover the time before you may qualify for private or public insurance policies. (Such as OHIP in Ontario).

  • Most clinics can help in either French or English either directly or with use of a translator. Many clinics will be able to support other languages with use of translators.
